How to protect your dog from leishmaniasis and parasites

The mild Costa del Sol climate is lovely for walks, but parasites like it too: mosquitoes, fleas and ticks are around almost all year. Good prevention is far simpler and cheaper than treating the disease.

Leishmaniasis

It is spread by the bite of a tiny insect, the sand fly, which is most active at dusk and at night during the warmer months. The province of Málaga is an area where the disease is common.

To prevent it we combine several measures:

  • Repellent collars or spot-ons that stop the insect from biting.
  • The leishmaniasis vaccine, for dogs where it is recommended.
  • A yearly test in the clinic to catch it early.
  • Keeping your dog indoors at night during the high-risk months.

If your dog is losing weight, has sores that will not heal, dandruff or very long nails, come and see us: these can be signs of leishmaniasis.

Fleas and ticks

Besides being a nuisance, they can transmit other diseases. We will recommend the external parasite treatment that best suits your pet: spot-on, collar or tablet.

Internal parasites

Intestinal worms are common, especially in puppies and kittens, and some can pass to people. We set the worming schedule at the appointment, based on age, whether there are children at home and whether your pet goes into the countryside.

Heartworm is also present in the area. It is spread by mosquitoes and can be prevented.

Frequently asked questions

Does my cat need parasite treatment too?

Yes, even if it never goes out: fleas come in with us or with other animals.

Can people catch leishmaniasis?

Only through the bite of the insect, not from contact with the dog.
